Hawaii Makes Surfbreaks Historic Landmarks

Governor Linda Lingle signed a law into effect on June 2nd making portions of Oahu's North and South shores into historical landmarks. The measure was defeated in the legislature by what state Senator Fred Hemmings describes as partisan politics, but it was resurrected by the Governor in the form of an executive order.

The actual benefits of this seem fairly minimal, and it is more a symbolic recognition of Hawaii's breaks being deeply rooted in the traditions of surfing. I'm really not actually sure what the purpose of this is, to be honest.

According to Surfer.com, "Hemmings hopes this executive order will bring back recognition and prominence to Hawai‘i in the international surf community."

I'm no expert on the international surf community, but I'm pretty sure the North Shore is still, by far, the most famous, recognizable, and prominent series of waves in the world. But hey, way to be proactive?

My Favorite Things

This video crams a fairly sizeable portion of my favorite things into one clip: the Mos Eisley cantina, Daft Punk, Liam Gallagher, Sir Alec Guinness as the one true Obi Wan, and Greedo getting shot (first).

A Daft Punk remix of the cantina track would've been epic, but at this point that's just being greedy, because there is a whole bunch of stuff about this World Cup spot that makes me feel warm and, if not fuzzy, at least a little less prickly than usual.

The Seafarer Residence by Jared Poole

Great seaside home by Jared Poole. This amazing building is located in Surfer's Paradise, Queensland Australia. The particulars:
The Seafarer Residence by Jared Poole

Location : Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia.
Site Area : 1390m2
Building Area : 1880m2

The composition and massing of this 3 level plus basement carpark residence was a response to the shape and constraints of it’s site. Located in Surfers Paradise, Australia, the site tapers out from a street frontage of 10m, to a water frontage of almost 60m capturing views from the hinterland to the ocean, this delivered opportunities from most off the house to provide an outlook, whilst maintaining privacy from neighbours, influencing the planning of the house.

Strongly expressed lines and flowing forms emphasize a strong relationship with the site. A balanced application of horizontal and vertical elements complement the use of framed elements to provide relief to the visual bulk of the building.

31 Days...

New Banksy Pieces in Toronto

"Icon" is a word that gets thrown around alot these days, and "gets thrown around alot these days" does too. Anyway, Banksy is a street art icon, and some of his work has popped up in Toronto just around the time his film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, debuted up thar. For my Minneapolis peeps, you can still catch it at the Uptown. For my Korean peeps... well, wait for the bootleg?

If Illustrators Designed Football Shirts...

As some of you may know, there is nothing in this world as near and dear to my heart as the game of football. As most of you probably know, football's crown jewel, the world cup, will be played in South Africa this summer. Umbro and Anomaly have collaborated with designers to reimagine seven countries' football crests.

The seven in question are the only nations ever to lift the prestigious Jules Rimet Trophy: England, France, Germany, Italy, Brasil, Argentina and Uruguay.

If you need help distinguishing what from what, at the top you have my favorite in Brasil, followed by Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, Germany, France, and England below.

Nike has a similar project that doesn't really measure up to the class and intricacy of the Umbro creations in my opinion, but they might be worth a look: go here.

SEXY UPDATE: Video with models from each of the 7 countries. Worth your time

Action Sports Drives

This is not, apparently, a new company, but Action Sports Drives are sweet and I want one.

Actually there are many things I want, and these probably near the bottom of the list. You know what I really want right now? A Chipotle chicken fajita burrito with everything on it. You know what the chances of that happening are? Zero. Fucking nil. Because I live in Korea. Yeah.

But hey, there's always a bright side: I will not eat something that contains more calories than a three layer frosted birthday cake.

"Yacht A"

Or: "$300 Million Price Tag is No Obstacle When You're a Russian Oil Tycoon."

For those of you who don't want to watch the vid, the particulars are: 340 feet, 3-speedboat garage, master suite which is as secure as a bank vault, and a helipad on the bow. The interior was designed by Frenchman Philippe Starcke, who is famous for being a French designer.

Ah, Russia. You'll notice his offices are in London, not Moscow. This is because if his office was in Moscow, he'd be dead because those vicious bastards eat each other alive. Not that I'm prejudiced against Russians or anything...but I've seen a couple fictional films, and they really opened my eyes to some of the startling realities of Russian business. Or something. I was only joking comrades.
